This was a day of cathedrals and chapels and interviews and talks. This is the inside of St. Mary's that I climbed the bell tower later. But first, oh jet lag. How do I love thee? Let me count the ways: 2 AM, 3 AM, 4 AM etc. I finally got up at 6 AM and went for a jog/walk (a wog? a jalk?) past the deer park and around the water meadow. This is all enclosed within the walls of Magdalen College. Here is the quad right outside my bedroom.

And then out through the gateway on the left is more beautiful grass and spires. You can just scan through these since this is pretty much the whole city. Oh, notice the rain? I was told later that "this is unusual weather for August, did you bring the weather with you?" Really? Really. Yes, in my suitcase. Along with the traffic.

And then, the deer! What are these? I mean, I think they're deer, but they're definitely not American venison. I mean American deer. They're much smaller. Oh, as I moved to get a closer picture, my leg brushed past a nasty plant of some sort. And then the painful itching started. I'm fine now but I should have learned that lesson from orienteering. Don't go off the path. Right Emily?

Here's inside the park near the skull from yesterday. Lovely.

And here is the New Building at 200+ years old. This is where we have the poster sessions. Still ridiculous that everything is so beautiful, old, and used for science fairs for old people.

After that, I went back to bed since I finally felt tired. I slept for 3 hours in time for the second half of the morning session. After lunch, I had an interview with Susan Lea. It was really quick and short, the presentation was from a laptop, and so the whole thing was odd. We definitely do more for our postdoc interviews. But, she offered me a job so that's cool. I'll meet again with them for dinner and pub on Thursday so I'm not going to think about it until then. I don't know what I'll decide. To be honest, as much as I love this town, um, there's not much to do . . . Seattle has spoiled me rotten. Surfing? Thai food? Orienteering? Mini-donuts from the scary man at Pike's? Anyway, on the way back after the interview, I went touring. Walking past a little house, I noticed a plaque hanging inconspicuously on the wall. Hello! It was Edmund Halley's house. Of comet fame. And not the sink cleanser. Wow.

And in case you were wondering what Blackwell's, the greatest bookstore ever (besides I guess Sam Weller's) looked like here it is. And, the White Horse Pub of Saturday's fame.

Then it was off to Christ Church Cathedral and College where some of Harry Potter was filmed. Here's a pretty staircase that was apparently in the movie at some point.

And here is the dining hall that the Hogwart's Dining Hall was based off of and where it was partially filmed. SO cool.

And a better view of the Head Table.

What a country. They have a whole fancy room devoted to butter!

And here is the top of that Harry Potter staircase looking down.

Then outside the hall is a huge quad. The bell tower rings 101 times at 9:05 because the original college had 101 students that needed to be within the walls by 9 PM and well, Oxford time was officially five minutes behind Greenwich.

Turning right out of the quad into the Cathedral, this is the only cathedral in a college in somewhere. All of the UK? Probably. It's good that our chapels don't look like this. There's so much to look at, I don't know how well anyone would pay attention. It would be cool though. I think I might try to catch an choir evensong on Wednesday since all of the Shakespeare plays are sold out this week.

Then I walked out of Christ Church and went to St. Mary's Cathedral where for six bucks, you can climb to the top of the bell tower. Here's the tiny narrow staircase looking down and then up. My mom would not have been happy in this small space that kept going up and up. The handrails were basically ropes looped vertically to the center post.

And look at this, a weird water spout. I think we should get one of these for our house. Do you think the neighbors would like it?

And then here is me at the top of the bell tower. Some college is behind me. There are a bazillion!
